Rajkumar is only another boy, helping on a market stall in the dusty square outside the royal palace, when the British force the Burmese king, queen and all the court into exile.
He is rescued by the far-seeing Chinese merchant, and with him builds up a logging business in upper Burma. But haunted by his vision of the royal family, he journeys to the obscure town in India where they have been exiled.
The picture of the tension between the Burmese, the Indian and the British, is excellent. Among the great range of characters are one of the court ladies, Miss Dolly, whom he marries; and the redoubtable Jonakin, part of the British-educated Indian colony, who with her husband has been put in charge of the Burmese exiled court. The story follows the fortunes — rubber estates in Malaya, businesses in Singapore, estates in Burma — which Rajkumar, with his Chinese, British and Burmese relations, friends and associates, builds up — from through World War II to the scattering of the extended family to New York and Thailand, London and Hong Kong in the post-war years.

That is the golden word here. There were times, many times throughout the narration, I wished to have simply bought a non-fiction Burmese history book and could have used the remaining to purchase some beer. Alcohol did prove to be a crucial company during some parts of my reading. One thing you should be sure of, Ghosh loves history and with his books one can gain knowledge of varied historical eras.
It is not that bad. The transformation of landscapes and the changes in fortune and agricultural economies turn out to be quite mesmerizing. The exile of King Thibaw and the aftermath of his family life in the western coastal region of India was job well done.Rags to riches stories were very common among Indians in Burma. An incredible story. Delivery with Standard Australia Post usually happens within business days from time of dispatch. Breaking Cover.
As I see it the novel is a meta-form that transcends the boundaries that circumscribe other kinds of writing, rendering meaningless the usual workaday distinctions between historian, journalist, anthropologist etc. Would this sort of fluidity have been possible?
The Lives of Others. Word Wise: The meeting made a very powerful impression on me, and my memories of it remain intensely vivid to this day.
Q: Your characters seem to float between boundaries of both geography and class.
